Maybe up to now, you still have not heard of Acclaim. Well, read on and be convinced that this open source game is a good way to spend your time on. Gigaom has this as a backgrounder for all of you.
Community Inputs in Relation to Open Source Project Developments
When Acclaim Games publicly unveiled its Rockfree project, a free-to-play, web-based riff on the rhythm genre, last November, it did something unusual. It invited gamers to play an early version of the game so they could weigh in on the project as it was being developed.
That may not seem like a drastic move to the beta-shrouded web world, but for game makers it is another sign that the long-standing barrier between the game maker and game player that was set up to protect the profitability of projects is crumbling. One unintentional slip — or one public demo gone wrong — had always been enough to ruin a game’s prospects. As the video game marketplace grows ever more crowded, however, community engagement is increasingly being viewed as an invaluable tool. Just as the industry’s behemoths waited for startups selling virtual items to succeed before adopting such a business model, the old guard is slowly moving to engage directly with its communities.
The secret is to make community input matter. Greg Chudecke is building an online community around his startup Caffienated Games to so he can gauge community reaction to his ideas and ensure he’s building a game they’ll want to play. Virtual world and social networking mash-up Gaia Online built its own MMO, zOMG!, because the community asked for it. Even Electronic Arts relied on a community of creators to populate the Spore universe with creatures — to overwhelming success. And the Sony-published LittleBigPlanet is hoping players will create a limitless well of content for the game with its level-generating tools.
The clamor of the public however, if fickle, just like so many things in life. A very popular game today will not necessarily be a success two months from now. That is why the developers have to continue improving their products.
Contribution of Gamers
But Acclaim has taken community involvement beyond user-generated content and beta-testing; it’s involving them in everything from game concept creation to localization. Not only does Acclaim gain the expertise of the crowds, but it’s building a better connection with its fans.
When localizing the fantasy role-playing game 2Moons from Korean to English in late 2007, Acclaim opened the voice casting to its community. It provided character sketches; gamers supplied voice files. The project drummed up so much excitement for the game among that community that Acclaim is building a formal peer review system for use in future projects.
I have a question here however, when they say "formal peer review", as opposed to what? What is an informal peer review?
Earlier that year, Acclaim launched a game experiment dubbed Project Top Secret. The goal: Crowd-source the design of a massively multiplayer game. The idea the 60,000 community members created — a cross between World of Warcraft and Ben Hur, where players race, ride, rear, breed and fight with mounts — “was so radical it wasn’t something the Chinese team [contracted to develop the game] could make,” says Perry, who also directed Top Secret. “The thing that is interesting with crowd design is you end up with ideas no one has done before in the industry.”
I've checked out this particular game and it is well, a very entertaining one. I must have spent hours and hours on it in a matter of days. If this kind of game is not an entertainment for you, what about Origami? Go to this site and check the origami designs.
In this era of game-obsessed generation, it is not enough for game developers to rely merely on their genius, customer feedbacks are an important source of ideas.

The Battle for Wesnoth is an open source game designed and created by David White. Released in June of 2003, this is actually a turn-based strategy game. The concept behind this addictive open source game is based on Master of Monsters and Warsong, two Sega Genesis games. White's aim behind the creation of The Battle for Wesnoth is to come up with an open source game based on strategy that has easy-to-understand rules but offers an excellent artificial intelligence and exciting and challenging levels.
What The Battle for Wesnoth is all about
Set in a fantasy environment, The Battle for Wesnoth gives the players the task to create armies consisting of elves, humans, trolls, orcs, and other races. In the stable version, the game offers a variety of campaigns with three challenging levels. But since this is an open-source game, campaigns created by the actual users and players are available. Some of the campaigns available are The Eastern Invasion, The Hammer of Thursagan, Heir to the Throne, The South Guard, Liberty, An Orcish Incursion, and Delfador's Memoirs.
What gamers like about The Battle for Wesnoth
The most interesting feature of this game is its open source features that allow practically any user to create his or her own campaign, and even customize races. Another cool feature of The Battle for Wesnoth is its easy-to-use built-in map editor. Creating your own campaign is also easy, since you can just use a text editor when managing the Wesnoth Markup Language or WML.
If you want a fantasy game that offers more control over other characters and campaigns, The Battle for Wesnoth is perfect for you. Aside from honing your tactical skills, this turn-based strategy game can also help you hone your game planning skills as you create a new and exciting campaign.

Among the open source games, Search and Rescue is a classic game that really provides fun, thrill, and excitement. Even though it does not display a highly innovative simulation, it is still the best classic game in the name of computers. It's a game that many people often associate with the US Coast Guard in real life. But, the game developers refute this assumption. It's a simulation of a rescue situation in the real world that displays 3D graphics of helicopters and other rescue equipments, and humans.

If you are going to choose between Linux or Windows, I suggest you choose Windows (that is if you want to play this game) because this open source game is only available for Windows users. But, don't you worry Linux user, there are also games that are available for Linux. Surely, our technology does not stop developing more games for people's craving for entertainment. If you are interested to know, Search and Rescue is a game for your entire family.

The game primarily features a rescue situation that simulates the real world. What makes this game exciting is the cause of the victims' death. Rescuers save people who are helpless against the call of death amidst the deep ocean or the raging fire. However, in the real world the funny thing is that people themselves cause their deaths. How much blood is shed in the Mideast war today? These people care about nothing but revenge. Where are all the rescuers? There! Also butting in the war. So much for rescuing, huh?

Most people think that playing video games is just plain past time for kids and it usually gets in the way of a child's academic standing. But guess what? While it may be sometimes true that video games tend to be addicting for most kids and it usually takes up more of their time than what should have been allotted to studying, there are some benefits that kids could get out of playing video games.
First is that kids, who like to play video games, have been found to have a better level of visual acuity. They are also tend to focus more on a particular task and are better in coping with distractions than other kids. Kids, who play video games, have also been found to be able to spot details in experimentally designed confusing environments.
Well, the bottom line is that parents should also take note of the kinds of games that their children play. Most games that are now available do engage the children in a lot of focusing, but still, there are some that do not require as much cognitive resources compared to others. Of course, this all boils down to whether kids actually learn anything from the video games that they play. Learning is of course, different from doing mental exercises so know how to distinguished them in video games.

Open source applications are quickly proliferating nowadays. I'm curious why so many people are engrossed with it. Just like office softwares, these new member of the computer family is already making waves to the heart's of computer enthusiast. Aside from softwares, there are also open source games existing for the gamers delight.
If you think you're a chess, Chinese checkers or backgammon aficionado, then I bet you one to ten you will love DUGI. It's no ordinary, because DUGI is the would-be first and I guess the newest open source board game. The new computer game is created by Andrew Dubber, a researcher and lecturer based at Birmingham UK.
The round-shaped board is composed of 7 rings, divided into 24 parts. 12 black pieces versus white pieces should be arranged in the board's outer space. They can be moved forward towards the center or sideways. To capture an opponent's piece, you have to block it with two of your piece. There's also the dead zone which is the small circle in the center of the board. Winning the game is simple; you just have to capture all your opponent's pieces. But don't get too excited. The game is soon to be released.

The famous open source game jRisk really rooted from the popular board game called Risk. The only difference between the two is that jRisk is no longer the old-fashioned board game, but a version powered by the Java computer tool. As such, you now have a chance to play the game on your personal computer when you get bored or have nothing to do. In fact, you can just connect to your internet and play against other jRisk gamers. If not, then you can just play with your computer as the enemy.
Due to the fact that the computer game is already an enhanced game of the original, the creators added a few extra features to the old game. The newer version now enables you to use at most three different kinds of games. These are: Capital, Secret Mission, and Domination.
Aside from that, jRisk added five more map views to the Continents view. These are the Border threat, Troop Strength, Connected Empire, Ownership, and Card Ownership. You can really use these to observe your empire, manage your army, and be prepared for threats. This amazing feature is what I love most about the game because I can choose from numerous terrain maps. You should know that the terrain of your fortress plays a big part in winning the open source game.

NetPanzer is an open source game that can definitely challenge your skills and strategies in playing battler or war games. This popular computer game can be played by anyone such as yourself because it enables you to set up the game all on your own. Depending on the mood you have, you have the option to play this all by yourself if ever you are in your dwelling place or with other gamers on your network.
In this open source game, your main goal is to invade and occupy as many outposts as you can. In order to do this, you must destroy the tanks of the enemies to pass through their fortress. If ever you desire to win the game, you should come up with a winning strategy that will outwit, outplay, and outlast your enemies. It really sounds like the reality show, Survivor, but that is how the game really works. My advice for you is to get your enemy's outposts and use them as your very own production facilities of battle tanks. If ever you have already gathered a lot of battle tanks, you can now create your very own army and attack your opponent.
This game can be really fun and exciting to play, especially if you have a reliable internet connection. The reason for this can be because you are able to connect with your current server and then play the game with other online gamers. This kind of gaming is better than playing all alone against your PC.

StroQ is among the most played open source games today. One reason for this is that the puzzle game is very simple to follow, yet it is considered as one challenging and exciting open source game to play. The moment I started playing this, I was immediately addicted to it that I could not stop playing for hours.
If ever you are interested to play the StoQ, just remember that this is a puzzle game that is simple to play. Despite that, it can definitely challenge your skills and strategies in playing. To start playing the game, just start by pushing the button key of F5. After that, black and white squares found on the similar line will turn over. This means that the white ones will turn black while the black ones will turn white.
Then, the next step is to draw one line that is continuous from one box to another. That is what we call the stroke. As one dedicated player, you have a greater chance of winning when the boxes on same lines have similar colors, all whites or all blacks. Upon winning the challenging game, you are allowed to download other StroQ puzzles with your internet connection so it will continually test your brain power.

Are you the type of person who wants to test the range of your vocabulary? You can now do this by playing JDuplicate, and open source fun game that is really based on Java. Also, this is just like the popular board game Scrabble in the sense that you will be forming words from letters.
What I really like about this internet game is that it even encourages you to challenge more people who are also playing JDuplicate. This can really help you build your community of friends online because it also helps you chat with one another. In order to start your game with other people, all you need to do is connect to the official server of the game site. Another option is to ste it up on your own so that you are allowed to play the game on your local network.
Another great feature of the JDuplicate is that it can support various languages such as French, Russian, and English. If the language you speak is not included on the list, then you can just set it up on your own. However, you must know that this game only supports English when it comes to its word list. But, it still does not change the fact that the JDuplicate is one fun game that every gamer should try playing.

I love to test my brain power by playing intellectually-stimulating open-source games. My ultimate favorite game among all games today is BOXit, which I usually play during my lunch breaks or whenever I am commuting to work. I first played this puzzle game a few years ago, and it took me almost two hours to solve this game. Despite my best efforts, I still lost.
To play this challenging and computer game, all you need to do is solve the puzzle. It can be done by removing the tiles that have similar colors. In order to do this, you can drag the tiles over other tiles. The only catch here is this: you can remove them if they are on similar columns or rows. It may sound simple and easy, but it is harder than you think.
The objective in playing this puzzle is to get more tiles as you can. Just like chess, the game ends when you no longer have any moves to make. The scoring depends on the amount of tiles you remove from the game. The more tiles you remove, the more score you will earn. It why BOXit is equally fun as most PlayStation games.

I am definitely into racing games. Therefore, I make it a point look for open source racing games. I must say that looking for such a game is not that difficult. Maybe, it is because there are really a lot of guys who enjoy racing games. Thanks to open source games, I have something to get busy with whenever I don't feel like working.
I found this bogus open source racing game. It was named Critical Care. However, this has game has a twist. This is not your ordinary car racing game. The player needs to drive an ambulance. Of course, they have to race to the hospital and bring the patients. The players may also choose from a number of vehicle types for the appearance of their ambulance. Next, the game also features some NPC traffic and pedestrians. Of course, what good is a game without some enemies? The enemies take the form of ambulances who will try to vie for the attention of the patients.
At first, I didn't think I'll enjoy it that much. But, lo and behold! I actually appreciate the said ambulance racing game. I must admit though that I also like crashing my ambulance across the street. This game is lots of fun.

There is no better way to spend your free time than to play the fun and exciting computer game called Invade Earth. If you are not that familiar with this open source game, you must know it is the implementation of the Java software's Risk 2210 AD. Now that you have already heard of this, you might ask what makes this game different from other computer games on the internet. This is a reasonable question especially if you are really interested in playing the game.
This game is fun and exciting to play because it has a lot of rules and modes. Some of these are the Classic Mode and the Secret Mission mode, which are not present in all computer games of today. You can choose any of these modes to suit the game to your desires.
One amazing feature of this internet game is its map editor. You can use this to edit your terrain or your base before you start a game. When you are playing the game, but want to rest a bit, then you are allowed to save the game. Then, you can load the game again and play it until the end.

Computer game is the latest addiction in the land today. Many are playing not just for fun but to actually experience being the lead of a particular game just like in the movies. There are games intended for the children, teens and even those who are still young at heart. These games make the players experience to be in a battle, car race driver, adventurer, boxer, basketball player, and many more. It is like making every player's dream come true. Winning a game is a fulfillment for them.
There are many available games you can buy if you are interested. You can also download games in the internet to be more updated. One of the most popular games is Super Mario. This has been created and played years ago but it is still making a market today. This adventure game is about a boy who is going to save a princess but he meets plenty of dangers along his way. This best suits the players who are fond of adventure including the children.
However if you think you want to go in a battle, try fantastic four. This is originally a movie turned into a computer game. This will enable you to experience the movie thrill. These games are sure fun, you just have to choose what you want.

I am into interactive fiction types of open source games. I've tried 1893: A World's Fair Mystery. I must say that I enjoyed the said game.
The said open source game is typically a detective game. The fair offers many different people to interrogate. There are plenty of puzzles to be solved. The puzzles are not all that bad either. Some puzzles can be kind of vague. However, it doesn't mean that a person can't solve them. Besides, there are online clues that help the player move forward to the right track.
What I particularly liked about this game is because of the author's ability to describe the scenes of the fair. It's so graphically described. I can just picture out what the fair really looked like as if I was there myself. Also, the game featured great music that led me to really enjoy the game even more. Plus, there are some, rather, plenty of historical pictures in the game. Needless to say, I had the time of my life, knowing how much of a history buff I am. One can even explore the setting even when you do not want to solve the puzzles yet.
This game is one of the most entertaining and educational open source games that I have tried. You may want to check it out for yourself. You'll definitely have a grand time.

Computer games have become a craze to computer literates. These have prevented some children to play under the heat of the sun and a play with sand. Many computer users have been addicted to these features because they are being relieved with their day to day activities. These serves as a relaxation to them and at the same time it gives them the opportunity to play the role of their comic heroes. The result of the game is dependent on how well the player performs. These games are not only played by youngsters but also those who are young at heart.
Because of the great response that these games are getting from the users, many games were introduced for players to play and explore. These include sports such as boxing and basketball, movies, television series, action and many more.
One example of these numerous games is the Pacific Gunner, wherein the player will play the role of a navy officer of the United States and is expected to protect his fleet from their opponents coming from the different islands. His purpose must be to win the fight.
Another exciting game which players may consider trying is the Beach Head 2000. It is also an action game but here the player is the first target.
These games are just two of the numerous games that a player could try in the computer there are still other games that will surely fit your interest.

Play station is a popular past time and diversion not only for kids for adults as well. The games are not only fun, but they also make your game adventure as real as possible.
Today, you can have as many choices as you want when it comes to play station games. That's just the difficult part since the game options can be overwhelming. You want to try everything, yet you can only play one game at a time.
One of the top games today is Digimon Rumble Arena. It is a great fighting game that combines all your favorite characters from Digimon World 1, 2, and 3.

Computer games are like comic books that come to life. Computer games are virtual adventures whose outcome can be directed and determined by the player depending on the level of skills. In computer games, the player can act out his fantasies such as being a combat hero or a lord of a manor.
Computer games are not only enjoyed by geeks or the young but also by the adults. Most games are easy to play, requiring only agility using the mouse and keyboards, although some games may require joysticks. Computer games are interactive and some can be played online with other players. Some of these popular games also offer intellectual challenge.

There are plenty of popular options when it comes to computer games. Yet did you know that you could also experience the same fun and adventure from games that are less known. They are often called as Indie games made by smaller companies or an individual. They do not have a large budget or state-of-the-art tools. Yet they maximize all the resources available in order to create great and amusing games.
Playing Indie games is a good choice for they blend adventure, fun, and originality.
